This course is the first of a three-part series that bridges the gap between basic classroom learning and clinical application by providing a solid basis for the practitioners to assess the neural, muscular and skeletal systems of the body. The Physical Assessment courses are broken into:
Part 1 which covers overall body assessment with emphasis on the neck, spine and pelvis.
Part 2 (204) covers the upper extremities and Part 3 (304) covers the lower extremities.
Methods and techniques as follows:
- Perform a spinal and extremity assessment which includes neurological, muscular and skeletal exam.
- Effectively and safely apply the appropriate assessment techniques of the: lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine; pelvis and extremities, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee and foot and ankle.
- Identify the risks and benefits of assessment methods and the limits of their application.
- Identify appropriate referral and contraindications for therapy.
- Touch and manage a patient in a non-threatening, respectful and professional manner.
- Integrate visceral-somatic and somato-visceral knowledge into practice to optimize and individualize the treatment program for each patient.
- Recognize the inter-relationship and health implications with the physical structure, biochemical/organ dysfunctions, the emotions, the psychology and spirit of the individual.
- The student will be able to integrate the structural component as part of a holistic assessment program (mind, body, spirit).
