Our Training Program

Students come to us for many reasons and also from many different backgrounds and careers. We offer varied levels of training from Bowen Basics to more recognized and certified training. Please review our Training Programs and Course Descriptions below.

Introduction to Bowen

At Bowen College your first and best option to become more familiar with Bowen Therapy is Course #100 - Reboot Your Body Workshop. This is an introduction to the Bowen protocols and does not require the participant to be enrolled in the certificate or diploma programs. There is no need for prior knowledge in Anatomy or Physiology. Become more familiar with Bowen Therapy through this one-day introductory course.

It is designed for you to see whether this technique would benefit you on a personal level as a patient, be support to family members, a technique to add to your practice as a Health Practitioner, or a stand-alone profession as a Bowen Health Therapist or Practitioner. In Basic Body Bowen you will be introduced to one of the most powerful techniques to allow the body to reboot itself and begin its journey of healing.

This course is the first day of courses 101 and 102. It is possible to continue with the Basic Bowen Course in the subsequent 3 days of instruction (please refer to 101 & 102 courses) and if space is available. Participants having an interest in this arrangement must notify in advance of their intention.

Level I (Certificate level)

BowenFirst™ Certificate

BowenFirst™ is our basic Bowen Therapy training program. In this program you will participate in the hands on experience of Bowen training. This course is open to all, whether or not the candidate intends to move on to CBHT level or higher. In this course you are taught protocols for both upper and lower body to enable you to add to your current practice or assist family, friends and even animals (See Equine Bowen Training). Successful completion of this level of is required for those interested in moving on to CBHT or higher.

These are the required courses in order to complete the BowenFirst™ level I training:
  1. 101 and 102 Upper and lower body protocols
  2. 105 Review; case studies and integration
  3. QE1 – Physical and written Exam
  4. Functional Muscle Anatomy (courses 090 and 091 or equivalent)
  5. Anatomy & Physiology OR Completion of an Anatomy and Physiology course requiring a minimum of 160 hours (course 092 or equivalent)
  6. CPR Certificate
  7. A minimum of 5 Practicum’s consisting of 3-5 visits per client. You will be provided with a Practicum Package to document each session. (A practicum is a practice session in which you, as a therapist will give a treatment to a client). Of these 5 practicums, 2 case studies with treatment charts must be formally submitted for the Bowen College database and will be used for purposes of research and student reference.
    [The Practicum Package includes: a) Case Study Instructions and Form, b) Treatment Chart, c) Client Consent Form, d) Client Letter, e) Self Evaluation Form, f) Therapist in Training Assessment Form]
  8. Supervised Session - Supervised treatment sessions with a Bowen College appointed practitioner. These are treatments which involve discussion time with your supervisor giving you feedback on your technique. These sessions will be documented by your supervisor.
  9. Preceptorship involving at least 3 patients. This is an opportunity for you to observe your peers in practice. You may choose a practitioner of your choice provided you inform BCI. You will be required to document your hours for this component.
    Practical experience and requirement hours to be recorded - must total at least 100 hours. This can be a combination of Internship, practicum, and elective courses.
  10. BowenFirst™ Certificate (QE1): a written and practical exam must be completed and passed with a minimum standing of 75%.

If you are already a recognized health practitioner, upon submission of documentation, you may be exempt from course 090, 091, & 092

Level II (certified therapist level)

Certified Bowen Health Therapist© (CBHT)

To acquire the designation of Certified Bowen Health Therapist©, or CBHT©, you must complete the following courses and requirements. If you have completed BowenFirst™ you will be required to complete the remaining 90 & 100 level courses and the additional Practical Experience requirements. Practical experience and requirement hours must total at least 100 hours. This can be a combination of Internship, practicum, and elective courses.

  1. All 90 series courses or equivalencies. If you have already completed any of the 90 series courses as part of another program you can qualify for transfer credits, and be exempt from them.
  2. All 100 level courses must be completed. These can be taken concurrently with the 90 series courses.
  3. Current CPR Certificate
  4. A minimum of 10 Practicum’s consisting of 3-5 visits per client. You will be provided with a Practicum Package to document each session. (A practicum is a practice session in which you, as a therapist will give a treatment to a client). Of these 10 practicums, 5 case studies with treatment charts must be formally submitted for the Bowen College database and will be used for purposes of research and student reference.

  5. Supervised Sessions - Supervised treatment sessions with a Bowen College appointed practitioner. These treatments will involve discussion time with your supervisor giving you feedback on your technique, and will be documented by your supervisor.
  6. Preceptorship involving at least 5 patients. This is an opportunity for you to observe your peers in practice. You may choose a practitioner of your choice provided you inform BCI. You will be required to document your hours for this component.
  7. Standard of Approval Assessment - a one-on-one BCI Instructor evaluation where the student treats the instructor as a client (this session will be documented by your Instructor/client). The student will be assessed on their ability to incorporate all the knowledge they have acquired over the training and will be required to perform a Bowen Assessment, order of protocols, and perform the treatment session required for the presenting set of symptoms. (A fee will apply to compensate the instructor for new students to BCI as of Jan 2011.)

A current student from another institution or a Bowen certificate from another institution can apply to our program. Current practical experience and a BCI examination will be accepted towards completion of these standards.

To qualify for the Certification Level Training of CBHT, the student must pass all 90 and 100 level courses, as well as the practical experience and BowenFirst™ written and Practical Exam. The student must also provide two reference letters, one professional and one character reference. At this point, the student will submit an application to the Canadian Examining Board for approval and pay relevant fees to them.

The Canadian Examining Board of Health Care Practitioners, a certified educational institution by the Minister of Human Resources under sections 118.5 and 118.6 of the Income Tax Act, is a complementary health care organization, which has since 1991, set professional and measurable working standards for the field of complementary health care. This has been done in order to promote and support effective, safe, and ethical holistic health care practices. The CEBHCP Board addresses complaints either from the Teaching Institution (B.C.), members or from the Public.

Level III – (Diploma level)

Registered Bowen Health Practitioner© (RBHP)

To acquire the designation of Registered Bowen Health Practitioner© or RBHP© you must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. CBHT© Designation
  2. Completion of all 200 and 300 series courses
  3. Internship; Supervised sessions (10 hours)
  4. 20 Practicums (3-5) session visits; 5 of the treatments to be formally submitted to BCI
  5. Preceptorship involving at least 15 patients
  6. Elective seminars towards completion of required hours

Practical experience and requirement hours to be recorded must total at least 100 hours. This can be a combination of Internship, practicum, and elective courses.

We will transfer credits toward your training program for any courses that may be eligible. If you have already completed any of these courses as part of another program you can qualify for transfer credits and be exempt from them by providing Bowen College with adequate proof.

BCI offers a number of elective courses above and beyond the RBHP© requirements. These can be used to fulfill your 100 hours in addition to the practicum and internships. Please see our course descriptions for a full list of our elective offerings. As well, BCI currently recognizes the following elective seminars towards your 100-hour requirement:

If you have taken an elective seminar that is not on this list, please let us know and we can review it for recognition.

To qualify for the Diploma Level of Training RBHP©, the student must complete all 200 and 300 level courses as well as the practical experience. At this point, the student will update their application to the Canadian Examining Board for approval and pay relevant fees to them.

A current student from another institution or a Bowen certificate from another institution can apply to our program. Current practical experience and a BCI examination will be accepted towards completion of these standards.

Grandfathering of Bowen Students and Practitioners

If you possess a Bowen Certificate from another institution or have completed any Bowen related courses and are applying to our program, your current practical experience, as well as the curriculum you have taken will be considered for eligibility and acceptance towards our program.

You will also be required to pass a BCI’s examination as well as comply by the standards of practice set for CBHT© or RBHP© designations in order to receive full certification.
